These photographic tableaux were made in 1990. They are a series of 4 diptyches. Each diptych is a pairing of life and death. Most images are made, photographed from above, making these constructed photographs rather like maps. Small photographic masks are used to give human heads to dolls (rather than doll heads on humans as in Love Scenes). Two characters appear, a baby, and an old woman. These images were inspired by the death of a good friend, the photographer Murray Johnston, who died on the 3rd of January 1990, when my first child was only 9 months old. The juxtaposition of birth, and death haunted me, and led me to produce this series of photographs. |
