I started using photographic masks in the mid 1980's. People wear photographs of other peoples faces and are then photographed. The photographs were then taken "straight", so these images are not montages. I used the masks in my photographs to tell stories, constructing the scenes or finding locations to meet the requirements of the story. The series I created with technique was "A Rakes Progress" (1986) using my own face to make the masks. Love Scenes (1988) also uses this technique, this time the masks were made from the faces of dolls - Barbie Doll, Ken and He-Man. Living Scenes were made in 1990, by which time I was using masks less. Death Scenes are montages, made using Adobe Photoshop. |
